Combat Ranges in fighting can be defined as a partial relationship and this can fall into one of four general categories; Long Range, Medium Range, Close Range and Grappling Range.

A fighter who can control distance can normally control the fight and giving them a much better chance of winning/successfully overcoming the encounter. The weapon or tool of choice used for the defensive or offensive techniques will depend on the range or distance. Ranges within a combative encounter are defined as follows:

Long Range - Kick Range: Outstretched arm and fingers just short of touching the opponent's nose. This is just outside punching range however, take note that most kicks that use the shin are usually delivered within punching range.

Medium Range - Punching Range: Outstretched arm touching the opponent's nose with palm of hand. This is just outside of trapping range. Most punches and the long hook are thrown at this range.

Close Range - Trapping Range: Outstretched arm palm covers opponent's ear. This is just outside of grappling range. Most trapping, standing locks and the close hook occur at this range.

Grappling Range - Arm can grab the opponents head. Within this range head butts, elbows, knees, body strikes and grappling techniques occur.
